THE BASICS

Making Photography Effective In Social Media Marketing

Social media and photography has always benefitted from each other. On one end, there is no doubt that social media has helped tremendously in making photography more popular than ever by spreading a photographer’s work across the web thanks to shares and viral messaging. On the end, photography has helped establish social media as a viable communication tool with its ability to showcase a work and make it popular in the process.

As such, photography plays a key part in the growing field of social media marketing as photos play an important part in the promotion of a brand online, especially in social media. In a way, it can be considered a form of advertising photography. But social media marketing aims more for the longevity of the campaign as to how long it would be considered effective and how many have “helped” spread the campaign through shares and likes.

As social media marketers who wish to tap photography as part of their various campaigns like Mark Seymour Photography, there are some things that must remembered to help ensure the success of the campaign:

On Framing & Composition

As with any type of photography, framing and composition is important for people to be able to identify the brand. And depending on the type of photo you will be needing, different rules in composition should be taken into consideration. For instance, the cover image in Facebook timeline which, is a long, rectangular space and lends itself to compositions that feel “widescreen” in nature. On the other hand, the profile picture to be used for Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts are usually square, so the image to be used that will identify your brand as well should have the brand name and other  pertinent details that may be needed be able to fit in that square space.

On Lighting

Next to composition, lighting is a very important element that will set the identity of your brand. For instance, some heavy metal bands would go for some dark lighting in their photos.

The trick to great lighting isn’t so much where you shoot, but rather how much light you capture in the image and which can be achieved through white balance and ISO settings. You must also match the white balance setting to your shooting environment. If it’s indoors in fluorescent lights, choose that setting. Most cameras today have an “auto” setting for white balance which may not always get it right, so if the shot just doesn’t look right to you, keep experimenting until you find the right setting.

On Background and Style

Your choice of where the photos are to be taken is also important. Some entities have some sort of a brand toolkit or style guide available and if you are working for an entity with such style guides, make it a point to read through it to get a sense of what the entity’s sense of style is and put that insight to use when you’re shooting photos for its social media accounts. Whatever the style may be, make it a point that the photo would have a place to put in the brand.

On Photo Resolution

This is an important tip that is often overlooked. Most social media networks today are able to handle high-resolution photography so you have to make sure every photo you share through any of the social media accounts are of good quality and would not look blurred or grainy when viewed on larger screens. The higher resolution your camera is, the better not only for the photos you will share but also for the brand you are promoting.

Ah yes, the camera. If you have no camera at hand yet, chances you are having quite a hard time in choosing the best camera to use for your street photography. CONSIDERING THE CAMERA SIZE

One good thing about street photography is that you do not need to use a big camera or bring additional equipment to shoot. In fact, a small camera that can shoot quality images would work just fine. This is especially the case since doing street photography requires your camera to be light enough for you to bring around comfortably, with less bulk and obstruction. The downside though is that a number of these small cameras do not have features that you may find useful when you are shooting on the street.

This does not mean DSLRs are not good cameras for street photography. In fact, some photographers like Studio Bambino Photography use DSLRs for doing this type of photography as they provide more features and are somewhat more powerful cameras. However, they can be too bulky and using them may warrant more attention than you should when doing street photography.

In the end, the choice is up to you as the photographer as to what type of camera you think you would be more comfortable to bring around for your street photography. Whatever camera you choose should be something you should be comfortable using constantly wherever you go and would have the features you may be looking for in a camera.

4 Important Things You Need to Know about Street Photography

street photography tipsStreet photography is continuously becoming popular among photographers who like to go for an adventure within the city. It is basically a form of photography where a photographer takes candid shots not only on streets but in any place with the goal of achieving pictures that depict real human situations. You will be amazed to see street photographs that look so genuine and striking. The photos can be as remarkable as the images produced by professionals who are into natural wedding photography.

An awesome street photo is something that does not only draw the attention of viewers but will also make them feel that they are in the exact place and situation. It can capture the real emotions and expressions of people without having to make them pose for the camera.

Now, for beginner photographers who want to learn more about street photography, here are 4 important things that you need to know about this form of photography.

  1. Take your time, slow down

Always remember that your canvass is the whole street or area you are in and everything within your sight can be your subject. No need to rush too much or take photos too fast. Look around you first and observe which of the things you see can be great subjects to shoot pictures of. It is up to you on which to focus and recognize which one can help you achieve the pictures you want. Just walk around in your normal walking pace with a camera ready at hand. Stop and take pictures when you see something interesting to photograph.

  1. There is a right time for everything, just wait

Doing street photography is a little bit complicated than others may think of. Since you have no exact subject in mind as you walk along the street, there are instances that you cannot find the subject that can give you the street images you desire. Thus, it is important for you to be patient and learn to wait. If there is a particular person that you regularly see and you want to take a picture of him or her, then you can position yourself on a specific spot where your subject normally walks or passes by. Be patient, wait and then take shots once you see him/her. There is a right time for everything. If you cannot take pictures of your subject today, then try again tomorrow or the next day.

  1. Choose between asking permission or not

Normally, a street photographer doesn’t ask permission from his/her chosen subject but then, the decision to ask or not to will totally depend on whether you think it is necessary or not. You need to respect the privacy of others and if you think they may not like it then don’t take pictures or ask permission first. Keep in mind that when shooting in the streets, you need to consider the feelings of your subjects and think first before you click.

  1. A lighter camera is more suitable to bring

There are advanced point and shoot cameras that street photographers now consider buying because of its light size yet wonderful features. You can still produce sharp images with this kind of camera and you don’t have to worry about walking all day long with a heavy DSLR. Of course the choice still depends on you, it carrying a DSLR won’t be a hassle then well you can use one in taking street pictures.

Creating an Efficient Photography Workflow

photography workflowThe work of a photographer involves a multitude of tasks. It starts from preparing for a shoot until the editing of images. There are plenty of small tasks along the way and a professional photographer has to finish everything before he can finally say that he has successfully finished a project.

With this, it is vital for a photographer to be organized in everything that he does so as to avoid making mistakes or missing something that may ruin his work.

An efficient photography workflow is what a photographer needs to speed up his work, organize his tasks well and deliver an impressive output. A professional photographer can create his own workflow based on his usual routines and then incorporate in it anything that he learns along the way.

A beginner photographer might need some help on how to make one given that he has not much experience. If you are one of those beginners looking for tips to creating an efficient photography workflow, then you arrived at the right place.

Here are some guidelines that you can apply when creating your own photography workflow.

  1. Sign contract

An important part of your workflow is to discuss the terms and conditions of a written agreement with the client. If there are necessary changes, revise the contract and keep a copy of it.

  1. Set up camera

Set your camera to its most ideal setting after assessing the location and the style of photography you want to use. Do this at least a day or two before the event.

  1. Shoot in RAW

During the event, bring along all important photography equipment including accessories like memory cards and batteries. It is recommended by professional to shoot in raw so you can manipulate the images to your heart’s desire.

  1. Transfer and backup

Right after the event, transfer your files to your computer using a card reader. Keep also a backup by saving a copy into a DVD. Photographers of Martin Pemberton Photography always secure copies of their raw files.

  1. Present images to client

Call the client and schedule an appointment for you to present the files and allow them to choose which images for print.

  1. Choose the best

Use image processing software to arrange the pictures for editing later. Choose the best by rating it using numbers 1-5 or any similar way of rating available in the program you are using.

  1. Batch edit and retouch

Separate the best images from the less awesome pics. Batch edit pictures that appear similar or taken in one part of the event. This will speed up the post processing time. After that, you can now focus on the images for print and do some retouching.

  1. Order and deliver

Once the images are ready, order them for printing and then deliver them to the client.

  1. Send a simple thank you card

Show gratitude to your client for doing business with you by sending a thank you note.

  1. Add client info to database

Make sure to keep your client’s information into your database or list. You might need to use them as a work reference in the future. Wedding photographer derby keeps a file of his clients in a secure database.

With an efficient workflow, you can increase your productivity and be a better photographer. Your clients will also be impressed with the output you delivered and will recommend you to others.
